Playgrounds Surf Break
Playgrounds is the wave most people mean when they say they learnt to surf on Nusa Lembongan. It sits in the channel off Jungut Batu on the island’s west coast, alongside Shipwrecks and Lacerations, and of the three main breaks it is comfortably the friendliest.
The wave
Playgrounds is a mellow peak that breaks both left and right over water deeper than Lembongan’s other reefs. The take-off is soft, the wave walls up slowly, and there is time to get to your feet and find your line — which is exactly why it earned its name. On small days it is a beginner’s paradise; when the swell picks up, the sets swing wider and it turns into a fun, open-faced wave for intermediates as well.
When to surf it
The May–September dry season brings the most consistent swell, with light south-east trade winds blowing offshore in the mornings, but Playgrounds picks up enough swell to be surfable year-round. Surf it from mid to high tide — the extra water keeps the reef comfortably below you and the wave at its slowest and most forgiving. Early mornings are the pick: glassy conditions and the smallest crowd. For a month-by-month breakdown of seasons and swell, see our guide to the best time to surf Nusa Lembongan.
Getting there
Playgrounds is a short boat ride from Jungut Batu Beach — only a few minutes across the channel. This is where our beginner lessons run, so if you are learning with us, getting out there is simply part of the day.
Hazards
Very few by Lembongan standards. The reef is deep enough at mid to high tide that most beginners never touch it, and there are no strong currents inside the channel on typical days. As everywhere on the island, keep an eye on the tide — the reef gets shallower as the water drains out.
Frequently asked
Is Playgrounds suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — Playgrounds is the most forgiving wave on Nusa Lembongan and where our beginner lessons run. It breaks over deeper water than the island’s other reefs, so falling is far less intimidating.
Do I need a wetsuit or reef booties at Playgrounds?
No wetsuit — the water is warm year-round, and a rash vest is plenty. Booties are not essential at Playgrounds because the waves break over deeper water, but they are available on request.
How crowded does Playgrounds get?
It is the busiest of Lembongan’s three breaks in the July–August peak, especially mid-morning. Early sessions are quieter and usually glassier — another reason we run most lessons at first light.
