Learn to Surf in Nusa Lembongan
Our group lesson is how most people catch their first wave on Nusa Lembongan. It is designed for complete first-timers, and for anyone who has had a lesson or two before and wants to lock in the basics. Groups are capped at three students per instructor, so you get feedback on every single wave rather than waiting your turn in a crowd.
What happens in a 2-hour lesson
Every lesson starts on the beach with a short theory session: how a wave breaks, where to lie on the board, how to pop up, and the safety rules for the spot. Your instructor then takes you into the whitewater, where you practise the pop-up on real waves with a push and a pointer on every attempt. Once you are standing consistently, we move you onto small, unbroken green waves — for most students that happens within the first lesson.
Where we surf
Beginner lessons run at Playgrounds, a mellow, slow-breaking wave in the channel off Jungut Batu Beach. It breaks over deeper water than Nusa Lembongan’s other reefs, which makes it the most forgiving place on the island to learn. Mornings are usually glassy and offshore during the May–September dry season, and the waves stay surfable year-round.
What to bring
Just swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and drinking water. We supply the surfboard, leash and rash vest, and the boat transfer out to the break is included. The water sits around bath temperature all year, so you will never need a wetsuit.
Still weighing it up? Our beginner’s guide to surfing in Nusa Lembongan walks through exactly what your first session looks like.
